You know the ones…you and your friends have stayed up all night talking and having a blast – but at a point, late at night (or early in the morning) the conversation starts to get really wacky and out there…I love that time.

 Female Hero (who and why):
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She was the first strong female icon for my generation (that I could actually relate to). She was the first one to help me realize that being strong physically, mentally and emotionally were the qualities of an empowered woman. And that there was something very real about those qualities.

 Are You a Feminist?
YES. I have always been a feminist, but was afraid to truly label myself as one until the last few years. I am a feminist and I stand for the empowerment of all women on this planet. I belong to humanitarian organizations that help women around the world become educated and liberated. I am writing a book about empowering women, and I am proud to be a pledging Priestess of The Goddess Temple of Orange County. Every day I find more ways to express my joy in being a woman and inspire others to do the same.

As a Kid, What Did You Want To Be When You “Grew Up”?
I wanted to be an artist. Sometimes that meant a photographer, painter, singer, fashion designer, filmmaker, and so on. I tried it all, but photography was where my heart always was. I am now a photographer, so clearly I was pretty wise about my intended direction as a kid.

What do you do in your spare time? Hobbies? Collect anything?
I collect antiques, but especially old photographs. You know the snapshots that your Great Grandma had in her closet that nobody wanted when she died? Well, I want them. I love them. I love old snapshots, portraits, vacation photos, all of it. I have hundreds (maybe thousands now that I think about it) of photographs. Some date back into the mid 1800′s.

Danny B. Band

Danny’s been playing music for years with various acts, but has only recently started working with a well-seasoned group of musicians from all backgrounds to move the ideas out of his head and into the studio and venues everywhere. It is their passion for independent music as well as finding a direct purpose of moving all those who listen to it that makes the people in this band able to create such a beautiful sound when they come together. Danny has been writing for his solo career for the better part of two years in tattered notebooks and on napkins in 24-hour diners. He believes that without art and color the world we live in would be a dull and boring place. It’s his sincerest hope that if nothing else, at the end of all things concerning this solo project, the Danny B. Band will have successfully painted a bright spot on the landscape we all listen to.

Band Name (or nickname):
Danny B. Band

Band Influences:
That’s a hard one, I listen to a lot of different types of music and take something from all of them. I use a lot of jazz chords, with pop rhythms, punk rock energy and street culture, but a lot of hooks like you’d hear on the radio. The Beatles were a big influence, the re-birth of indie after the end of the century was big too, with bands like Montreal, the working title, Manchester Orchestra and Minus the Bear. The sound we’re working with in the studio is also influenced a lot by Phil Spector’s wall of sound, layering things to make it sound really thick and full, and reproducing that live. Some Third Eye Blind and John Mayer thrown in for good measure as well.

What was the first concert you ever went to?
Oh gosh, this is kind of embarrassing…when I was like 12, this girl’s mother took a bunch of us to see Smash Mouth at the Lakewood. They were playing with Lenny Kravitz and Buck Cherry. It was pretty amazing at the time.

Where do you dream of performing one day?
I’d love to play for the Queen of England, that’d be pretty amazing. Other than that, Madison Square Garden. It’d also be nice to play a packed out Variety Playhouse show here in town, that place has a killer sound.

Where was your first ever gig?
haha… It was a high school talent show, playing in a street punk band. They made us go on first after the intermission. We played maybe three songs I think, one original and two covers, one being “ruby soho”(come on, we were 14) and the other being “knowledge”(come on, we were 14). Nobody knew what to make of any of it, our friends got up and danced, I guess everybody got amped. We never found out if we won because apparently you can’t have winners and losers in school anymore, lest anybody’s feelings get hurt. I remember my guitar came unplugged halfway through the little set, and I just kept going. I still watch this tape we made of that performance and cringe…

Sound like?
What we do on my solo project is a cross between radio pop, like you’d hear on a top 40 station, really good indie, like you’d hear in a coffee shop in the bohemian district, with not-so-obvious roots in independent hardcore rock and roll. The lyrics are about relationships with friends, with girls, with yourself, and with the world, because everything is a relationship when you think about it.

It’s really hard to explain, but we’ll try…someone once told me that everyone has three entity’s that guide you through the walk of life. There are good entity’s that support your goals and bad entity’s that antagonize them. Then it hit me – “The Great Entity…”

Seriously? It’s been a dream of mine and Jeremy’s to play House of Blues on Sunset.

Where was your first ever gig?
Ahhh The Cobalt Café in Canoga Park…It was a 6pm show on a Sunday and I had just gotten over mono and felt like death.

Sound like? Our biggest issue is we don’t want to sound like anyone else.

Causes we support:
The only cause we support is young singers, songwriters, musicians and their craft.

Directions:
Arrange your banana chips, carob chips, sliced apples, celery sticks, and raisins on your platter. Crush up some of the banana chips and mix them into the almond butter for the dip and spoon it into your glass bowl – that’s it. Now pick up your favorite “chip” and go at it. How can something so simple be so good…

Healthful tip: Beware of banana chips with sugar added. Many companies try to sneak even more sugar into bananas – which, believe me, have enough natural sugar in them already. Look for all natural dried bananas instead.

At the age of ten – fueled by a childhood of cartoons and creatures – she set her sights on the world of animation. Since her rural hometown was ill equipped to prepare Ashley for her future, she spent much of her teen years traveling to industry related workshops and seeking mentors. She graduated from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI, earning a BFA in Animation and Digital Media with a concentration in traditional animation, as well as the honor of Valedictorian. She studied under David Chai and Steve Stanchfield, who constantly challenged her to draw outside her comfort zone. Currently, Ashley lives in Los Angeles with her two pet geckos and a parrot, living the dream as a storyboard artist for Fox Television Animation’s AMERICAN DAD.

 Female Hero (who and why):
This is going to sound cliche, but probably my mom. She’s the one who taught me that if I want something, to go out and get it. She’s a powerhouse…and I don’t mean that in a cold, corporate ball-busting way. She’s done some really interesting things in her life; gone to India as an exchange student, been chair(wo)man of a college board, owned and operated her own aquatics business, ran for mayor, and most recently completed training as Reiki healer. She’s a natural born teacher and nurturer–an emotional rock for any friend who needs support. She’s also got style. Not many fifty-year-old ladies can wear patent leather zebra print high heels, but she pulls it off well.

	Are You a Feminist?
That’s a tough question for me because I so rarely think of the world in male and female terms. Many of my closest friends are guys and I’ve never been made to feel like I couldn’t keep up with them. There’s never been anything I couldn’t do or have because I’m a girl (see mom’s philosophy above). I think that if a person is seriously talented and has the ambition to match, the old men in charge just can’t argue with it even if they want to.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
Believe it or not, exactly who I am now. A friend of mine once said to me, “your eight-year-old self would be very happy with how you turned out”. It’s so true. I’ve always wanted to draw for a living, have lots of pets, and live in a crazy apartment full of toys and faux fur furniture. I’m literally living my dream right now.

What Do You Do in Your Spare Time?
I’m kind of a workaholic, so I almost always have a side project waiting when I get off work. Currently I’m putting lots of energy into my costume for this year’s Labyrinth masquerade ball. Each year I build an elaborate head dress with feathers, sequins, and animal horns. If I’m not doing that I’m probably making some Wumplings or feeding one of my pets. When I’m all out of projects to work on, my favorite thing to do is absolutely nothing. I really enjoy just loafing around, watching tv and eating fatty snacks.
